Getting Started

Paint the wall with the base colour – we used Lorain’s Cream. Apply two coats of paint; wait for the first layer to dry completely before applying the second layer (about 30–40 minutes between coats). Then leave overnight before doing the stencilling, as the masking tape used for keeping the stencils in place might pull off the fresh paint.

Here’s how…

1. Paint the squares with your first stencil – the stencil has square cut-outs that create the tile effect. Position the stencil with masking tape. Using a sponge roller, paint the squares with the Coral Stone. The roller must not be dripping wet, and the paint must be spread evenly over the roller.

2. When the squares are dry, take a dry 50mm paintbrush or a stencil brush and apply a dry-brush
technique in Cloud White to each alternate square. Wait until dry then remove the stencil. Repeat across the entire wall until every alternate square is painted a lighter background colour.

3. Position the patterned stencil with masking tape on the exact spot where the ‘squares’ stencil was placed. Tip: Make small pencil marks at the end of step 2 so that you know where the second stencil must be placed.

4. Using a stencil brush, apply Comfort’s Blue to each alternate square (those with the Cloud White background).

5. Mix 5ml Elvis Mix with a pot of Stencil of Paris. This paint will tint the Stencil of Paris to a soft beige.

6. Using a paint scraper, spread the Stencil of Paris paste evenly over all the open squares painted with Coral Stone in step 1. Lift the stencil carefully from left to right after each application.

7. Make sure the stencil is clean before repeating the pattern (rinse it in lukewarm water and dry well) across the entire wall. The Stencil of Paris takes 2–3 hours to dry completely.

  1. Hi

What do I use over the tjoko paint not to come off in my bathroom for the steam…

    1. Hi Sonet, our clear glaze makes the surface water- and UV-Resistant. It also prevents stains and provides a more washable surface. If you are applying the clear glaze, always allow the paint to dry for at least 4 hours before starting with the glaze application. In coastal areas or during winter months we recommend to only start glazing the next day (leave paint to cure overnight).
      1. Dilute the Clear Glaze with 30% water (30ml of water for every 100ml of Glaze) or 3 parts Clear Glaze and 1-part water. (we recommend cooled, boiled water as it is less contaminated)
      2. On darker Tjhoko colours we recommend 50/50 (1-part Tjhoko Clear Glaze and 1-part water. You can also use this ratio for a less sheen finish.)
      3. Dampen a clean, colourless cloth with water and squeeze to remove all excess moisture. A Microfibre cloth works best.
      4. Dip the cloth completely in the mixture to absorb the mix and then squeeze to remove excess moisture.
      5. Evenly wipe onto the painted surface. Work in a well-lit room to ensure that the entire surface is covered. If streakiness or lines occur – (it is caused by the fabric / cloth) just apply a second coat, half an hour later.
      6. Should you wish to change colour or add paint techniques over the clear glaze, you can do so once it it has cured for an hour or longer.

    1. Good morning Trix yes you can use Tjhoko Paint on Bathroom wall tiles, below is what you would need and how you would go about painting them. What you need:
      • Lacquer Thinners
      • 2 pieces Mutton cloth cut to the size of a kitchen towel
      • 110mm or 160mm foam roller and handle or paintbrush depending on your preference.
      • Paint Tray
      • Tjhoko Paint in a colour of your choice
      • Tjhoko’s Clear Glaze

      Method:
      1. Clean the surface well with Lacquer Thinners.
      2. Important is to use gloves and a mask.
      3. Wait 20 minutes for Thinners to evaporate
      4. Pour some Tjhoko Paint in a paint tray
      5. Use the foam roller and wet it well in the paint ensuring that it is covered in paint all around.
      6. Start by evenly rolling the paint onto the surface. Don’t worry if air bubbles appear. These will disappear as the paint dries. Be careful not to over work the foam roller: Don’t roll too much – this is when a rough surface is created once the paint has dried.
      7. Once the first coat is evenly applied, allow the paint to dry (more or less 30 minutes) before the next coat is applied.
      8. Once the paintwork has been completed wait at least 4 hours before the glazing process starts.
      9. Apply the clear Glaze:

      1. Hi Trix, I trust that you are amazing this Friday, I thought I would just add that we do not recommend to paint the wall tiles inside of a shower. Have a great Friday.

    1. Hi Tebogo, thank-you for making contact with us, we do not recommend to paint counter tops as this is a surface that is repetitively used. A product that has been specially formulated for this purpose is recommend.
